McCune Smith
Breakfast is my favourite meal of
the day. Being unable to sleep for the excitement of it some nights, and no
more so than when I’m due to visit one of Glasgow’s many cafés, open bright and
early to satisfy my morning cravings. From a student budget point of view,
going out for breakfast is often less expensive than lunch or dinner, and so we
are firmly back on the SAAS-saving hype with this post.
Having been recommended to me by
a friend, a quick gander at their Instagram confirmed that McCune Smith on Duke
Street would be my next morning jaunt. The name instantly stood
out, having recently sat through a French lecture on modern slavery, noting a
certain Dr James McCune Smith. A black intellectual and abolitionist, who in
1837, became the first African American ever to receive a university medical
degree, from the University of Glasgow nonetheless. He studied at “Old College”,
which stood a stone’s throw from the café, and therefore earning it its name.
History lesson over – back to
breakfast! When it comes to food, I hold the mantra “more is more” close to my
heart, and when we glanced at the menu we both knew it was definitely going to
be one of those mornings. We ordered granola with fresh fruit and milk; yoghurt
with banana, honey and dark chocolate; and two spelt flour rolls with bacon and
scrambled egg, all washed down with a latte and a pot of tea. At no more than £2.80
per plate it would’ve been rude not to double up, two breakfasts always trump
one.
Having paid only £7.80 (?!?!) for what
was definitely enough to feed two people, plus a coffee, McCune Smith is by
far the least I’ve spent eating out for breakfast in Glasgow. Aside from being
dangerously close to uni, the fact that the food was unreal – thick natural
yoghurt, sweet and nutty spelt roll, and local Ayrshire
bacon – confirms McCune Smith as my new fav breakfast spot. Their menu also
pays particular attention to vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free options, keeping
everyone happy.
