Paesano Pizza

Pizza is hot topic in Glasgow. Since the arrival of Italian immigrants in Scotland during the late 19th century, Italian restaurants have dominated the city’s dining scene, contesting the title for THE most Italian Italian. However, where solely pizza is concerned, there is only one name on salivating lips – Paesano.

Could it be its relaxed school dinner style seating, or perhaps it’s the uber-casual strictly NO RESERVATIONS ethos, which gives Paesano the edge? Claimed as the first to introduce Glasgow’s foodies to the joys of authentic Napoletana pizza, they wood-fire their real-deal yeast-sourdough pizzas at 500C in artisan-made ovens direct from Naples itself – authenticity not to be sniffed at.

Think buttery mozzarella di buffalo, sweet and rich tomato sugo, encompassed by a ring of light, chewy and slightly smoky crust. With your choice of toppings like salty cured prosciutto, aromatic basil, spicy salami and sausage, fresh mushrooms and aubergine, plus an array of ever-changing specials, you’d be forgiven for assuming such ingredients will amount to an equally striking bill. Thankfully, the beauty in Paesano’s simplicity is that these pizzas all cost less than a tenner, starting from five pounds! Five pounds for pizza so big most leave with the tell-tale brown cardboard box slung under their arm, leftovers making for an indulgent bedtime snack.

Having recently expanded upon their city-centre Miller St. digs, to new West End premises, there is really no excuse for Glasgow’s students to tolerate the greasy horrors of takeaway pizza chains to cure that hangover.

Don’t take my word for it – Stylist magazine named Paesano as “best pizza in the UK” (2017), beating all competition from many notorious London pizza haunts.

The fresh ingredients, laid-back ambience and student-friendly price tag is what makes Paesano my post-night out debrief lunch/flatmate dinner-date spot of choice.
